MORE details have emerged about the arrest of a city man on suspicion of animal cruelty and the seizure of dogs as two raids were launched at the same time.
A man was arrested and four dogs were seized in Worcester yesterday when two search warrants were executed by police and RSPCA officers, one in Dalegarth Court in Warndon, Worcester and in Whittington, near Worcester.
We previously reported how police swooped on Dalegarth Court in Warndon and arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of animal cruelty, one of the warrants executed.
Two premises were targeted following an investigation that was launched by animal welfare charity Naturewatch Foundation whose work is focused on exposing animal cruelty and wildlife crime.
Research completed by one of the foundation’s investigators led to a ‘comprehensive intelligence package’ being forwarded to West Mercia’s Herefordshire & Worcestershire Rural Crime Team and the RSPCA where numerous suspected wildlife crimes were identified.
A police spokesperson said: “The joint approach highlights the importance of partnership working in efforts to tackle animal welfare and wildlife crime across the two counties. With the support of local Safer Neighbourhood Team officers, the successful execution of these resulted in the arrest of one offender on suspicion of Animal Welfare, Hunting Act, Deer Act and Protection Of Badger Act offences at an address in Warndon.”
Alongside this arrest, three dogs suspected of being used in the offending were taken into care by RSPCA officers, whilst a fourth dog was also taken into their possession.
A spokesperson added: “A full investigation into this offending has commenced and agencies are hopeful that a positive outcome will result. The man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
Sergeant Simon Hallam of the Rural Crime Team said: “This is a great example of agencies working together with the common goal of tackling wildlife crime and animal welfare issues.
“These types of crime can often be wrongly perceived as low level crime, but this is simply not the case.
“During these horrible offences upon wildlife, and dogs owned by perpetrators, animals are subjected to injury and suffering, and often serious damage is caused to farmland too.
“We must all work together to ensure that such offenders are brought to justice.”
