SENTENCED | Rural Crime Team officers have successfully secured a criminal behaviour order following a detailed investigation into a report of assault and theft at a hunting incident in the Sherborne area.

On Tuesday, 3 October 2023, a member of the public – a man aged in his 70s – had been assaulted at a hunt incident in the area of Leigh.

A detailed investigation was carried out, and Christopher James Mills, aged 36 and of Lytchett Matravers, was subsequently arrested and charged with assault.

At a hearing at Bournemouth Crown Court on Monday, 8 December 2025, Mills entered a guilty plea and was fined £1,500. He was also made the subject of a criminal behaviour order for a period of three years.

A man has been handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) following a detailed investigation led by the Dorset Police Rural Crime Team into a report of assault and theft at a hunting incident in West Dorset.

Shane Chapman, aged 34 and of Verwood, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and theft during a hearing at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 19 July 2024.

This was in relation to an illegal hunting incident that took place on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, in which Chapman assaulted one victim and stole the property of another in the Minterne Magna area of West Dorset.

Following a further hearing at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 21 February 2025, a five-year CBO was secured, imposing the following restrictions on Chapman:

Not to be on any private agricultural land without prior written permission from the owner or legal representative of the land and to produce any such written permission when asked to do so by a police officer. Agricultural land is land used as arable, meadow, or grazing land for the purpose of farming, market gardens, allotments, nursery grounds or orchards.

14th July 2018 – Poacher gets two year behaviour order

Shane Chapman

A MAN convicted of poaching offences for a second time has been handed a two-year criminal behaviour order.

Shane Chapman, 27, of Bingham Road in Verwood, was issued the order by Poole Magistrates’ Court on June 11 after pleading guilty to a charge of daytime poaching. The offences happened on rural land near to Sixpenny Handley.

As part of the order he must not go on private land without written permission from the owner or legal representative or be in possession of a catapult in Dorset other than in a dwelling in Dorset.

PC Claire Dinsdale, of the Rural Crime Team, said: “Shane Chapman has caused distress to our farming community with his behaviour and has continued to carry on his activities which include poaching.

“Crucial intelligence is gained when the community report incidents to the police. We can build a clear picture of what is happening and illustrate the harm caused to the community.

“We are pleased the application was successful and this tool is being used more and more nationally in rural crime.

“This order goes to highlight this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated by police, the courts or local communities.”

She added: “We will continue to work closely with the rural community and partners such as the National Farming Union to highlight the true impact of poaching offences and other ways that farmers are threatened, when they work in isolated areas.

“The order was granted for two years, with the intention of preventing further anti-social behaviour occurring anywhere in Dorset. We would ask the community to always report any crime or suspicious incident, including cold callers trespassing on to farms.”

19th June 2018 – No jail for poacher who filmed himself committing crimes

A POACHER who live-streamed footage of himself committing offences has been made the subject of a criminal behaviour order.

Shane Chapman, of Bingham Road in Verwood, first appeared before magistrates in Poole in April alongside Maurice Cooper and Peter John Nurdin to admit daytime poaching – a crime under the Game Act 1831.

During the sentencing hearing, it was heard that a live video had been posted on Facebook on the afternoon of Friday, November 24 2017. The footage showed the men driving around a field near Sixpenny Handley.

Chapman and Nurdin, 48 and of Corner Close in Marnhull, could be seen on the video attacking pheasants with hand catapults, while Chapman’s father Cooper, 45 and of Addison Close in Gillingham, filmed them on his phone.

Dead birds could be seen in a cardboard box on the rear seat and floor of the vehicle.

In the video, Chapman was seen firing several shots from his open driver’s window, and at one point jumped on a pheasant as it tried to escape.

The three men were sentenced to fines.

However, Chapman was called back before magistrates on June 11, where a two-year criminal behaviour order was made.

Under the order, he is prohibited from acting or inciting others to behave in an anti-social manner which causes harassment, alarm or distress to any other person in Dorset.

He is also barred from being on any private land without the prior written permission of the owner, and from possessing a catapult in any place other than a private house. Magistrates say he is allowed to attend ‘organised catapult events outside Dorset’, but only with the written confirmation of organisers.

3rd April 2018 – Poachers who filmed offences sentenced at court

Three men who admitted poaching offences in East Dorset have been sentenced at court.

Shane David Manny Chapman, 27 and of Bingham Road in Verwood, Maurice Cooper, 45 and of Addison Close in Gillingham, and Peter John Nurdin, 48 and of Corner Close in Marnhull, appeared at Poole Magistrates’ Court where they pleaded guilty to a charge of daytime poaching under the Game Act 1831.

The offences occurred on rural land near to Sixpenny Handley.

At around 3pm on Friday 24 November 2017 a live video was posted on the Facebook account of one of the defendants showing the three of them driving around a field in a silver vehicle.

Shane Chapman and Nurdin were seen catapulting pheasants, with Chapman also driving while his father Cooper filmed them on his phone.

Dead birds could be seen in a cardboard box on the rear seat of their vehicle and one was lying on the floor in the rear of the vehicle.

Chapman could be seen to fire several shots from his open driver’s window and at one point is seen to try and jump on to a bird as it tried to escape. He was encouraging Cooper to keep filming.

At the sentencing hearing, Chapman was fined £600 and also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge. He was also fined £100 for an offence of driving a motor vehicle without lawful authority on land not forming part of a road. His vehicle, a Suzuki Vitara that had been seized by police, was also forfeited.

Cooper and Nurdin were fined £500 for the poaching offence and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £50.

Police Constable Claire Dinsdale of Dorset Police’s Rural Crime Team said: “On behalf of the rural community we very much welcome this result. Crimes such as poaching and repeat occurrences of criminal damage are prevalent across Dorset farms.

“Where farmers have tried to challenge trespassers and those causing damage, they are met with threats and abuse or worse.

“Rural crime such as this is often hard to get to court, compared to urban crimes where CCTV and witness evidence assists a prosecution case. However this is happening every week in Dorset.

“For anyone doubting the impact of poaching on our rural victims, please visit the National Farmers Union website and watch their videos of farmers talking about such rural crime. We are part of the national group set up to tackle poaching and bring standardisation to how offenders are dealt with in the courts. This is made up of police, CPS and organisations such as the NFU. For example if you use your vehicle in crime, we will apply for a disqualification from driving and for the vehicle to be crushed.

“Anyone that sees a suspected incident of poaching should call 999 immediately, reporting as much information as possible such as vehicle registration, make and model if possible. Recent incidents not happening at the time can be reported online at http://www.dorset.police.uk. It is crucial everyone reports such offences so we get a clearer picture of where this is happening and when.”

  1. I am sick to death reading about these vile filthy evil bastards and time the law changed to deal with these filth. I would like to see the same done to them as they have done to the animal or person. Until the law gets much stronger these things will never stop so time to act NOW.
