Man to be sentenced after dead birds dead dumped at shop

A man is due to be sentenced after being found guilty of possessing two protected birds.

James Kempster, 39, of Marchwood Road, Eling, near Totton, was convicted at Southampton Magistrates’ Court after DNA evidence linked him to a dead kestrel and barn owl, both protected species.

The birds were discovered outside Broughton Community Shop in Hampshire, alongside 50 dead hares dumped in the early hours of March 15.

Kempster will be sentenced on June 23.

Inspector Stu Ross, of the Test Valley rural policing team, previously said: “This was a shocking incident which caused distress to a small village community in the heart of rural Hampshire.”

CCTV footage captured two men arriving at the shop and dumping the hares.

One of the men was seen smearing blood on the shop front before pushing the birds into the door handles.

While Kempster was cleared of criminal damage, magistrates found the DNA evidence on the birds sufficient for a conviction.
