Anti-hunt activists have described hold-ups on main roads near Shipston last week as ‘complete carnage’.

Warwickshire Hunt, whose hounds spilled out onto the B4035 near Brailes and on the Fosse Way, apologised, but accused saboteurs’ actions of spraying hounds and sounding horns as significant distractions for the dogs.

West Midlands Hunt Saboteurs (known as sabs) published a video of the two incidents, which took place last Monday and Saturday.

One video shows traffic braking as hounds and hunt members run across roads. After heated exchanges on both sides, a person associated with the hunt then tries to block the protesters from filming, before laughing and mocking the sabs as traffic builds up.

“It was complete carnage,” said a spokesman. “Hounds running onto the road in front of traffic, running up and down the road between vehicles and the huntsman almost riding someone down on a public road.

“Then we have a paid employee of the Warwickshire Hunt openly laughing at the whole situation and sticking his fingers up. Complete arrogance.

“We have no doubt the Warwickshire Hunt will try to blame us for this, that they will claim they are being constantly harassed and that the video is highly edited. What they seem to forget is that a member of their hunt was convicted of hunting and killing a fox last year – and that they film everything we do yet never back their claims up with footage. It is their employees who were trying to block us from filming what was going on and then laughing about all the chaos they had caused.”

Sam Butler, master of the Warwickshire Hunt, said: “The Warwickshire Hunt, part of the rural community, takes the safety of its hounds and the public extremely seriously and apologises if anybody was inconvenienced whilst we were conducting our lawful hunting activities in the area.

“Edited footage can be misleading, particularly when activities take place in the presence of saboteurs, one of which has been convicted of falsifying evidence against a hunt, whose actions – such as shouting, cracking whips, spraying hounds and sounding horns – creates significant distraction and potential safety risks.”

The saboteurs’ spokesman said: “It is pure arrogance that a Warwickshire Hunt employee should think the situation on the road was great fun and then literally sticking his fingers up. That is how untouchable the Warwickshire Hunt thinks itself.

“The Warwickshire Hunt are quite literally laughing and sticking their fingers up at us and the general public. They think it is hilarious that their hounds are running in and out of vehicles on a busy stretch of road. They think it is hilarious that motorists have been inconvenienced. They think it is hilarious that motorists may have been endangered. They think it is hilarious that people were almost ridden down. They think it is hilarious that their hounds could have been hit and killed. They think it is hilarious that Warwickshire Police will do nothing about it.”

Anti-hunt protesters are unhappy that Warwickshire Police dropped a community protection notice against the hunt in 2023 and refused to disclose a secret deal through which the hunt would share their calendar and routes of trail hunts, and when they might cross roads.

Channel 4 news broadcast an item on Monday showing the use of drone cameras in tracking hunts’ activities around the country.
