Co Down woman heartbroken after beloved pet cat ‘torn apart’ by hunt dogs in her garden

13th January 2026

Chloe Crozier, from outside Banbridge, was left heartbroken when her much-loved pet, Rodney, was killed by dogs taking part in a fox hunt in the area.

Animal lover, Ms Crozier described the brutal attack which took place when the dogs came to her home with the hunt on December 30.

The distressing incident was caught on security cameras at the property.

In the footage, it’s suggested that a member of the hunt can be seen attempting to hide the cat’s lifeless body following the attack.

On Tuesday 30th December 2025 Newry Hunt entered my property,” Ms Crozier said in a Facebook post. “It was immediately clear that the hounds were not under control and as a result my pet cat was brutally tore apart by multiple hounds.

“What followed has been deeply distressing, instead of coming to me and explaining what had happened as I was there at the time, a member of the hunt attempted to dispose of my cats body by throwing him over the wall.” And she added:

“The failure to report the killing and the disposal of my cat’s body demonstrates a complete lack of transparency and responsibility. I consider this handling of the situation to be unacceptable and deeply distressing.”

Ms Crozier also hit out at the actions of the Newry Hunt since the horrific incident. “I got no face to face apology and I wasn’t reassured that any change was going to be done about this,” she said. “The loss alone is heart breaking, but the actions that followed have made this even more painful. No one should have to discover such a thing without explanation, and no family should be treated with such disregard on their own property.”

Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom or Ireland where fox hunting remains legal.

In a statement, the Newry Hunt said it is “aware of events that took place on December 30, 2025 and hunt officials have been in contact with the cat owner to apologise unreservedly for the distress this has caused”.

“The hunt deeply regrets this incident and the distress caused and is taking this matter very seriously,” they added. “The hunt is reviewing our procedures to prevent any recurrence.”
