Sign blocking pavement on Manchester Road is removed

6th April 2022

A ROAD sign blocking a pavement in Knutsford town centre has been removed.

The direction sign for a Cheshire Forest Hunt point to point steeplechase at Tabley House on Sunday blocked the path on Manchester Road for anyone using a wheelchair or pushing a pram.

Knutsford town Cllr Andrew Malloy, who spotted the obstruction, said: “I just thought it was bizarre to place a sign there with little thought for pedestrians or people with a disability.

“We have this situation with parked cars but I’ve never seen notices like this in between signs.

“How does someone in a wheelchair or mobility scooter get around this?”

Cheshire East Council said the sign does not belong to the local authority and vowed to reprimand whoever put it up.

A council spokesman said: “This direction sign was not placed in this position by Cheshire East Council Highways and does not belong to the council.

“No organisation should place their own temporary direction sign in this way, partially blocking the pavement and causing an obstruction for pedestrians and users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters, also a potential road safety hazard.

“The sign has been removed and we will speak to those people responsible.”
