Boyfriend smashed fish tank during violent drunken attack on terrified partner
She thought she was going to die.
17th March 2020
A violent boyfriend left his partner covered in bruises after tipping her 50 litre fish tank on top of her during a drunken argument.
George Bailey lost his temper with his victim after they got home from a night out and she complained about him biting her shoulder as they had sex.
He spent 90 minutes battering her with his fists and she was left with cuts on her legs and feet after the tank, which contained ornamental fish and a turtle, crashed down on top of her as she cowered on the floor.
She was showered in water and injured by the broken glass and bits of rockery which had been in the tank, Exeter Crown Court.
She was wearing only underwear during his onslaught but managed to grab a dressing gown and run out of the house in Brixham to seek refuge with a neighbour.
Bailey, aged 31, of Lower Rake, Loddiswell, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage to the fish tank.
He was jailed for ten months, suspended for 18 months, ordered to do 120 hours unpaid community work and 20 days of rehabilitation activities and pay £500 compensation and £425 costs by Judge David Evans.
He told him: You took exception to being told off by her and acted like a bully. You attempted to stop her saying things you didn’t like. Rather than using words or walking away, you turned to violence to shut her up and that is quite shameful.
“This was on any view a sustained attack and she thought she was going to die. You seem to have lost all self control. She felt unsafe in her own home.”
Miss Hollie Gilbery, prosecuting, said Bailey and the victim had been drinking on the night of January 4 this year and went back to her home in Brixham where an argument broke out while they were having sex.
He bit her shoulder and she told him to stop but he bit her other shoulder and she pushed him off and rolled away. He apologised but then attacked her, punching her and pushing her against the wall next to the fish tank in her bedroom.
Miss Gilbery said: “She was trying to defend herself when she heard glass smashing and felt water falling on top of her from the fish tank. She is not sure if he dropped it on top of her or whether he punched it and damaged it.
“The tank with the water and gravel landed on top of her. She was pleading for him to stop but he punched her several more times.”
Ms Jefferies fled the house in her dressing gown and went to a neighbour’s house. Police took her to hospital where doctors found bruises on her head, face and mouth, two black eyes, bite marks to her shoulders, and cuts, scratches and bruises on her legs and feet.
She made a victim statement which said: “I was shocked and gutted. I did not expect to be assaulted like that in my own home. I was terrified I might not get out alive. I genuinely thought I was going to be killed.”
Mr Stephen Nunn, defending, said Bailey had little memory of what happened because of how much he had drunk but accepted he had caused the injuries.
He said the fish tank was smashed during the course of the argument and he had not dropped it on her or used it as a weapon. He has sought help for his behaviour since the incident.
